a long time in the making / attempt at an introduction

Hello internet! (how are you supposed to start a blog??)

My name is Sarah and this is my food blog.

Oh god not ANOTHER amateur food blog...

Sure is. I've been wanting to start a food blog for well over a year now and never got quite round to it, so excuses aside, here it is.

The thing is, I never write recipes down (or strictly follow them) so posts are probably going to be few and far between at first as I get used to it all.

I only became interested in cooking around the start of 2011, partly as a form of procrastination/distraction from uni work, partly inspired by volunteering at the Green Action Food Co-op, partly influenced by my boyfriend who is a fantastic cook (we actually tried to start a joint food blog a year ago, only got as far as a title and banner...).

Now I LOVE to cook, it's probably my main hobby but I often get stuck in a soup/curry/stew rut and rarely try new recipes anymore, which has got pretty boring. Last weekend I went to the amazing Green Man festival with a group of friends and was completely inspired by a raw food workshop we attended. So I decided ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and to STOP PROCRATINATING and finally start experimenting with new recipes and actually write them down and share them (though it has taken me a week to do...). Also I'm going to be unemployed in a week and moving to a new city with only my boyfriend for company so I'll need something to occupy me in between the endless job applications and collecting my dole money...ha ha, oh the life of a graduate.

Very aware that I could start rambling soon, so I'll end with a few final notes; I'm vegetarian, so no meat or fish will be included in this blog, and I love to explore vegan dishes too. Some initial ideas for posts include:

  • Themed days (think "meat free Mondays", though I don't eat meat anyway, but you get the picture. Maybe "raw food Fridays", though I think I'm programmed to view Fridays as junk food days!)
  • "Healthy" junk food (saw an awesome recipe for Kentucky style fried chicken and curried beans, thinking of trying it with Quorn pieces; this theme will also include things like home made pizzas and burgers etc)
  • Restaurant reviews (not in a formal way, will probably just consist of me squealing and posting photos of interesting vegetarian food I find)
  • Thoughts on: vegetarianism/veganism, the meat industry, organic farming, fair trade, 'buying local' etc (probably not for a while as most of my intellectual effort is focused on the job apps and I want this to be a relaxing hobby!)

And some initial goals are:
  • To write recipes down, of course. Aim to post 2 things a week…starting next week (27/08/12)
  • To try out more things in cook books instead of just inventing variations of the same things all the time  (of course inventing is still fun and important but I really need to learn how to do more things)
  • Learn how to photograph food to a decent (i.e. not just instagram) standard. When I get a new job - save for a DSLR (might buy one joint with boyfriend).
  • Bake more (you may be saddened/gladdened to find out this is not going to be a cupcake blog, not really a fan of baking due to the precision it requires, BUT! I do like to eat cake, so should probably make it more often) EDIT 24/09/2012: I just recieved a KitchenAid as an amazing house-warming gift off my parents - expect lots of baking after all.

Well...that was longer than expected.  Time to cook dinner!

Salty x

Final FINAL note: the title of this blog is based on one of my nicknames, 'Salty' due to the apparently "excessive" quantity of salt I put on my food...very much in denial about this but hopefully by writing my recipies down I can monitor this apparent addiction!
